The countdown has officially begun to when I’m a new mom. The nursery is complete, the bags are packed, we are anxiously awaited Baby Girl. So, I have decided to share with you some essential equipment for new moms.
Crib
Get a crib, a crib mattress, and a fitted sheet. Definitely get 2-4 fitted sheets just in case there are spit ups and blow outs. Make sure the crib is up to standard and completely safe. You do not need crib liners–they aren’t safe.
Swing
Having some sort of baby swing is essential. Yes, you will want to always hold your baby, but there are sometimes that you just need a break. The swing will come in handy because babies love the rocking motion. And, if your baby is colicky, it’ll help them sleep.
Nursing Pads
If you are nursing, get nursing pads. You will drip and soak through. If you don’t want embarrassing milk stains on your shirt, get some. They stick right onto yourn nursing bra and are super soft. Make sure you change them out often.
Swaddles
Get plenty of swaddle blankets. Not only will it help your baby stay warm, but comfortable. Babies are used to being in close quarters and having a swaddle will make them feel secure.
Stroller/Carseat Combo
You will definitely need, by law, a carseat for your baby. You will definitely want a stroller. So, make sure they work together–make sure you can put hook the infant carrier into the stroller. The easiest way to do this is to buy the same brand. Sometimes, infant carriers, carseats, and strollers even come in a package.
Diaper Bag
Get a nice diaper bag. It is for you just as much as it is for the baby. Splurge on one that you absolutely love and that can be used as both a purse and a diaper bag. It should be able to fit diapers, wipes, extra clothing, pacies, toys, your wallet and other purse essentials in it.
Baby Carrier or Wrap
You will want some way to hold your baby up against you without using your arms. By a carrier or wrap to keep them close to you, to help with skin to skin, and to allow you to go hands free while still cuddling with your baby.
Burp Cloths
These are your saving grace. Get at least 10. Burp cloths help with spit up, drool, even blow outs and surprise pees. Don’t go super fancy with them–instead, focus on sturdy burp cloths.
Nipple Cream
If you are breast feeding, especially for the first time, or especially if you have sensitive skin, get nipple cream. This can even be prescription strength. Nipple cream is baby-safe while nursing and it will help protect your nipples from cracking and bleeding and soothe them.
Diapers/Wipes/Ointment
You can never have too many diapers or wipes. Pay close attention to the size of the diapers: if they are too small or too large on your baby, you will have more blowouts and soak throughs than you want. Also keep diaper ointment on hand at all times–new borns are very supsceptible to diaper rash.
Baby Soap
Baby skin is super sensitive. Make sure you have soap specifically for use on babies. Remember that less is more for babies and always gently wipe them down.
Bulb Syringe
Your baby will get stuffed up. The easiest way to keep their nasal passage clear is with a bulb syringe to get rid of the boogers. They are very inexpensive.
Nursing Bras
If you are nursing, these are essential. The cups unhook from the straps making nursing easier because you don’t have to take off your entire bra. Make sure you have 2 or 3 on hand.
